TEST:

UHREN FORUM GMT
WORLD TIME WITH A FEW DRAWBACKS

The German company Uhren forum in Notzingen near Stuttgart is a so-called direct vendor. The GMT is produced in Switzerland and Germany, and Uhren forum then sells the finished watches directly to customers. This model is the companyīs first attempt at incorporating a second time zone. We tested this watch to determine its suitability for world travelers.

The GMT model from Uhren forum with steel case, leather strap and deployment buckle costs 813 EURO. Besides telling time, this 91 gram watch displays the day and a second time zone. (In the photo itīs just about half past five in the second time zone.)

Readability and its consequences: The black dial with 2 mm indices is very readable, but the date ia a little small and the GMT hand is hard to spot.

test1.jpg (10577 Byte) Screw-down crown and screwed lugs provide a more secure hold test3.jpg (25886 Byte)
test2.jpg (9763 Byte) The deployment buckle stopped pressing into the wrist once we switched the strap halves.

STRAP:
This 20 mm leather strap attaches to the case via screwed pins. The strap is stitched through with the underside wrapped around the lugs and glued. The stitching showed no signs of wear even at the end of our test.

Strap: 12 of 12 points

BUCKLE:
The deployment buckle on our test watch appears sturdy and reliable. However, after just a few minutes of wear, because of the buckleīs construction, it left noticeable indentations on the wrist. We quickly solved this problem, however, by switching the two sections of the strap - putting the long end at 12 and the short end at 6.

Buckle: 6 of 8 points

CRYSTALS:
The crystal over the dial is 1.5 mm thick and slightly domed, while the crystal on the back is flat.

Crystials: 12 of 12 points

CROWN:
The screw-down crown has pointly edges and a daunting size of 6.8 mm. The advantage is easy setting of the exact time, date and second time zone.

Crown: 10 of 12 points

CASE:
Itīs readily apparent that the Chronoswiss case is the predecessor of this GMT. As with the original, which, incidentally, was also produced by the Pforzheim company of Walter Fricker, this caseīs two high-gloss sections, the bezel and caseback, are screwed down. The middle section has been adorned with an attractive vertical stripe pattern. Case diameter comes to 40.6 mm, hate 12.2 mm, weight with movement and strap 91 grams.

Case: 30 of 30 points

DIAL:
Black with large Arabic numbers, clear minute indices and a central 24-hour indicator. The dial is arranged with sufficient clarity, but we feel the date display could be a tad larger.

Dial: 8 of 10 points

HANDS:
The white hands are black in the dial's center and filled with a luminescent substance. Readability at night is good.

Hands: 10 of 10 points

The ETA caliber 2893-2 with skeletonized rotor and automatic bridge with bead polishings impresses with its careful craftsmanship.

A glimpse into the movementīs interior leaves the impression that something is missing. Not so: The movement has a diameter of 25.6 mm, while the case spans 40.6 mm.

MOVEMENT:
Uhren forum uses an ETA caliber 2893-2 in its GMT. This is a movement with a diameter of 25.6 mm and height of 4.1 mm. The manufacturer equips it either with a 24-hour counter or a second time zone indicator.

The pearlage on the automatic bridge and main plate lends this ETA 2893-2 a certain visual allure. The skeletonized rotor is gold plated.

Movement: 30 of 40 points

FUNCTION:
This varied considerably. In the crown positions the watch ran a little slow, in the dial positions clearly fast. The resulting "average daily timing in the various positions" fluctuated from the first to the third month between plus eight seconds to minus two seconds to plus seven seconds per day. More than 20 points were just not there.

Function: 20 of 24 points

COMFORT:
This timepiece weighs 91 grams and has a case diameter of 40.6 mm. Weight and size speak for themselves - thereīs nothing light and feathery about this piece.

Comfort: 10 of 12 points

READABILITY:
Hours, minutes and even the seconds are exceedingly readable. Then again, any watch that calls itself "GMT" should possess hands that immediately grab the eye. Unfortunately, this isnīt so with the GMTīs second time zone hand, which sneaks around between the minute markers and large indices like a fox in the woods.

Readability: 8 of 12 points

PRICE / PERFORMANCE:
The GMT from Uhren forum costs EURO 813. Thatīs 813 EURO well spent. Besides an excellent case and first-rate workmanship, this wristwatch possesses an exceptional design. A minor aesthetic flaw is the way the second time zone hand is hard to find. A more contrasting color would have been better.

Price /Performance: 16 of 18 points

OVERALL EVALUATION:
Another direct vendor joins the fray. Uhren forum understands that quality, design and functionality combined with a fair pricing are the most compelling sales pitches. What the GMT offers in this respect can easily be seen with the naked eye: a beautiful, reasonably priced watch.
